Matthew Scott was trained at the Guildhall School of Music – David Wilde (piano) Vilem Tausky (conducting) - and City University London, followed by studies in the Berlin Hochshule fur Musik, and at New York University and the Kurt Weill Foundation, where he worked as Music Assistant to Lotte Lenya. He worked on his PhD on the subject of the Amercian works of Kurt Weill at City University London under the supervision of Richard Langham Smith.

Matthew then joined Harrison Birtwistle and Dominic Muldowney at the National Theatre as composer and music director, writing and directing music for many productions and working with many outstanding directors including Sir Peter Hall, Piers Haggard, Lindsay Anderson, Trevor Nunn and Nicholas Hytner.

He has continued his interest in theatre music, having written music for over forty plays including premieres by John Mortimer, Harold Pinter, Alun Owen, Howard Barker ,Julian Mitchell and Mark Ravenhill.

Matthew Scott divides his time between homes in London and Herefordshire.
